Plastic Beach

Saniyyah Zahid

Every year, 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in our oceans. Among the 100 million marine animals that die every year as a result of this, the sea turtle is the most affected. More than half of the world's sea turtles have ingested plastic or other human trash. Seeing news of sea turtles grow to be deformed and disabled by plastic pollution was what inspired the piece I have entered into the Earth Day Festival Art Competition. The theme of upcycling led me to go out and picking up littered plastic bags to use in the artwork you see today. I hope that my entry has spread awareness about plastic pollution and encourages people to think twice about how we affect the world around us.
